Data from the Portage County Health District indicates the COVID-19 omicron variant may be loosening its grip on the county.
The 7-day average of cases peaked at 335 cases a day on Jan. 6. As of Jan. 24, the 7-day average was down to about 108 cases.
The peak in the 7-day average last winter came on Dec. 12, 2020, when it hit 140 cases, which was less than half the peak earlier this month.

According to the health district’s Jan. 24 report, the number of new cases reported per week has been decreasing since Jan. 4. The cases decreased 89% during the week from Jan. 18-24.
Among children under age 17, the 7-day average caseload also has decreased. On Jan. 24, the 7-day average for children was 25 cases per day. For the 0-17 population, the peak day was Jan. 6 when 161 cases were reported to the health district.

Meanwhile, Portage County residents continue to trickle into vaccination clinics. As of Dec. 14, 63% of women and 56% of men had received at least one vaccine dose. As of Jan. 25, 65% of women and 59% of men in the county started the vaccination process.
Countywide, people under 30 are those most commonly catching the disease. According to county data, 19.5% of the people getting COVID-19 are age 17 or younger and 19.6% of those getting sick are age 18-29.
