COVID-19 Masks

HUDSON — The Hudson Area Library is giving out free KN95 masks and at home COVID-19 tests to anyone interested.

The library is currently providing two masks and one test kit containing two tests per person. Members of larger families are eligible for additional free tests and masks. Individuals may return to the library for additional supplies once their supplies run out.

Library Program Director Tracy Robinson said there has been a steady flow of patrons asking for PPE. She hopes that the supplies will be replenished if they run out.

“The library is always adapting to the resources that the community needs,” Robinson said. It’s not surprising that the library is responding to the pandemic, too.”

According to Mayoral Aide Michael Hofmann, the masks are coming directly from New York State and additional supplies will be handed out at the Hudson Youth Department on Feb. 2, from 3-5 p.m.

“That said, like every other municipality in the county, we did not receive nearly enough supplies for everyone in the city; our initial shipment just before the holidays contained just 3,000 masks and a few hundred at-home testing kits for a population of nearly 6,000 residents,” Hofmann said.

The library is also providing a do’s-and-don’ts list on how to make the KN95 masks last.

Technically, the masks are reusable. But for the masks to retain their effectiveness it is important to keep them in a clean, ventilated container such as a brown paper bag when they are not in use. The masks should be stored at least 24 hours before using them again. Do not spray the masks with a cleaning solution. Do not continue using masks if the elastic bands are too loose or if they break.
