The Michigan-based Meijer stores will be handing out free N95 face masks to customers in the coming days and weeks.
The superstore chain announced that it has received 3 million face masks from the federal government, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 and the omicron variant that has driven caseloads to new records.
The chain has 258 super center stores in the midwest, including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.
The masks will be provided at no charge to customers who want them, available in boxes at the a table near the greeter station at the store entrances.
The greeter, wearing gloves, will place the masks in piles of three for the customers to take.
The superstore chain has already partnered with the federal government to make COVID-19 vaccinations available. In the past year or so, Meijer pharmacies have provided more than 2.8 million vaccine doses.
The retailer reminds folks that if they still require a vaccination or a booster, they are available and encouraged to receive one if eligible.
Health experts have said that the N95 mask provides the best level of protection, and recent recommendations from federal health agencies have shifted from any face mask to the better protecting N95 or KN95 due to the easily and rapidly spreading omicron variant of the coronavirus.
Posts on Twitter show that some people have already been receiving the free face masks over the weekend; however, a check of one of the Meijer stores in Rochester Hills showed they had not yet received their shipment.
